The Christmas Gong Show Part 1
17/12/2007
Ahh the irresistable allure of Christmas and all her trimmings. Champagne to start with lovely little lightheaded conversations and salmon canapes. Long lunches, lazy refills and contented sighs as the day rolls into night. The christmas tree lights dance in the background as the conversation shifts up a gear. The UN summit delegation have solved global warming and now turns it's attention to dessert. Times like these require wines that can go the distance. Wines that can match the richness of the gravy with the herbal aromas of the stuffing. Wines that fill the silences and soothe the senses. Granny's fallen asleep again and Cousin Toby won't come out from behind the couch. Who cares? Pour yourselves another and go forage in the fridge. It's Christmas after all....

The Christmas Gong Show Part 2
17/12/2007
Two sensational wines that will blow your senses. A fully loaded Californian Chardonnay packed with fruit and spice, served lightly chilled. Take a fork and load it up with roast chicken, stuffing and smother it in gravy. Open up and say 'ahh'. Now raise your glass and stare deeply into the golden libation, rolling lazily around you glass. You know the drill. Brilliant! The second humdinger is the Beaujolais. Vines older than anyone I know, regaling us with stories of life in the French countryside. A little 'ow you say' with a touch of Gaellic arrogance to keep things interesting. Not too heavy, not too light. Perfect with both white and red meats. Red berry fruit that tug on your heartstrings with tannins purring in the background. Go on. Give it some of your time and you've a friend for life (or at least until the next bottle). ...

The Christmas Gong Show Part 3
17/12/2007
Wines for those of you who like things a little more serious. No half measures here! How fast does this thing go? You want it all the way and the tank had better be full. The fire's been stoked and the scrabble is back in the cupboard for another year. The Spice Route and La Montessa Rioja just knocked on the door and they're not leaving until you answer. The beef in the oven is thrilled the support team have arrived. You can smell the chemistry in the air. Get out your BIG glasses, those buckets you promised you'd use when the time was right. Throw, nay, chuck the wine in and let the oxygen get accquainted. These kind of relationships bring those around them joy. No bickering or thrown toys, just the soft gurgling of a contented twosome, being nice to eachother and bringing out best in eachother. Has anyone got a camera? ...

What is it with Screwcaps?
26/06/2007
Part of an article written by one of the characters running this outfit...
So what is it about screw caps on wine bottles? Is the ubiquitous cork slowly being usurped by the lowly screw cap? Are we losing the Sunday afternoon activity sessions building that almost rectangular corkboard made from (gasp) used wine corks. No point doing that with screw caps lest you have particularly sharp tacks and bionic thumbs. No more dinner parties burning the end of the cork and drawing Errol Flynn style moustaches on your partner. What will you fill those kitchen drawers with now? And where is that gung-ho attitude of let’s introduce it now even if we don’t know the consequences. Have we become so PC (Pro Cork) that we refuse to acknowledge something that may actually be good for us?

Who is Checking the Checkers?
08/05/2007
With the steady increase of new wineries and labels appearing on shelves, it is akin to navigating a minefield in order to select the ‘right’ wine. Indeed the choice is so varied, one is often spoilt for choice. Unlike other FMCG products, wines do not advertise themselves as “new and improved” nor “under new management” in order to entice the weary buyer. A more practice is to announce the awarding of a medal at a well known wine show or an accolade received from a prominent wine critic. Adorning bottles with gold stickers shaped like Olympic medals is sure to draw attention and encourage purchase. But who gives these medals and we should we trust them? Much like a movie review, the comments passed and the subsequent ratings given are those of a particular individual/panel that you may have nothing in common with. ...
